Nutwood House overlooks the estate belonging to the Chief of the Clan Mackenzie.
Castle Leod is open to the public on certain days of the year. Interested Mackenzies can sometimes arrange a private tour. The Strathpeffer Highland Games are held here on the first Saturday in August every year. |
There's much else to see and do in the surrounding area.
Inverness (20 miles) - capital of the Highlands - is a bustling city with shops, restaurants, theatre, etc.
If you enjoy a dram, then pay a visit to Glen Ord Distillery at Muir of Ord (9 miles) or Glenmorangie (30 miles tain)
For something slightly different, you can have a tour and do some tasting at Highland Wineries at Moniack Castle.
Nearby Beauly is also worth a visit to see its historic 13th priory and do some gift shopping at 'Made in Scotland'.
Why not follow the Pictish Trail and explore the Black Isle and Easter Ross?

If you'd like some time on the water, then book a cruise from Cromarty or Inverness
to see the dolphins in the Beauly Firth and Moray Firth, or enjoy a sail on Loch Ness.

Just outside Inverness you will find Culloden Battlefield and Fort George where you can learn about Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite Rebellion. For those who enjoy ancient history, a visit to the Clava Cairns is a must.

Other ideas for day trips include a drive to the west coast via Glen Carron to the picturesque village of Plockton and famous Eilean Donan Castle.
Or head north to Ullapool (40 miles) from where you can explore the spectacular coastal routes of either Wester Ross or Sutherland. South of Inverness, you will find not only legendary Loch Ness, but the wonderful scenery of Glen Affric. Some 30 miles south of Inverness is the ski resort of Aviemore which is overlooked by the Cairngorm mountain range. |

Don't forget that the Highlands offer plenty of opportunities for walking, climbing, cycling, fishing, watersports, etc.
Cycles can be hired in the village.
You will find numerous golf courses all around - including an 18 hole course just 5 minutes walk from Strathpeffer square.
As for eating out, there's lots to choose from such as the Lovat Arms and Priory Hotel in Beauly.
Inverness has a wide variety of cafes and restaurants including French, Spanish, Indian, Chinese and African cuisine.
Or for something really special, book a table in the restaurant at Tulloch Castle by Dingwall.
